abyss \
(n) a website that hosts incomplete fragments of a person's perceptions & delusions through time
i came up with this phrase to disambiguate abyss (this website) from other "digital garden" projects.
to me, a garden is a thing that grows slowly over time -- it requires care, attention, and pruning -- in other words, ongoing maintenance. and i understand the impulse to want to "prune" your writing - it feels soft, comforting, and nice.
but i think that viewing writing through this lens is a mistake.
gardens produce nice healthy tomatoes if you put in labor over time. writing, on the other hand? sometimes you can sit down in a night and slap together something that you've been considering for a decade - and it often stands strong for just as long.
a little bottle of yourself, and the contents age.
do certain pathways require shifting? sure. like desire paths through a mausoleum. but to rewrite published content, i think, is an exercise in futility.
why not embrace the futile instead?
this website isn't a garden that needs tending, ever growing
it's a memory of a me - stare at your leisure. i hope you don't mind if it stares back a little.
